Blog Entry by Reinaldo Tanudjaja

First of all I want to say that this assessment is crazy. I knew it since the first time Ms. Laura gave me this Assessment it will going to be hard. Well this assessment is definitely the most challenging one and of course the hardest of all previous assessment. In this assessment I’m asked to make 5 pieces of academic writing. My topic was Windows Laptop versus Mac book. I knew that I’m not good at writing so, when I hear the word WRITING came out from Ms. Laura’s mouth last month it feels like 0 is waiting in front of me…haahahahahahahah...Well that’s an exaggeration. From this assessment I learn that Procrastinate isn’t good. I played too much until the last 2 days before the due date when I finally start doing it. In this assessment I also learn how to make different kinds of writing like persuasive, compare and contrast, research and reflection. I think the hardest part of this assessment is how to manage our time, understanding the topic, and the partial essay. I knew nothing about the partial essay because I didn’t pay attention in class. To do better in my next assessment I will not procrastinate, improve my grammar and vocabulary skills, and manage my time better.

In this semester, I already learned about how to writing with academic vocabulary. In this section, there are many struggles that I got it. Academic writing challenged me. Academic writing is a type of writing that used academic vocabulary and it useful if we want applies to the university. It’s challenged me and surprised me. I’m lack in writing section, now I must study how to write with academic vocabulary, which mean it is harder than common writing. In other part, I always think to improve my writing skill in the future. Not only writing skill, all of English skill. I will improve it by practicing more and more.

Now, academic writing is use for Assessments task 3. My topic for this assessment is comparison and contrast about iPhone 3G and Omnia Samsung. For the essay, we must use academic writing. For this assessment, I’m very exhausted to make it because of academic vocabulary that we must use, and not only because of the academic writing, we must make two partial essay and one virtual for persuade people. We must research as much as we can, and we must make bibliography too. It is so difficult to make this assessment.

Reflection

First of all, I would like to say that this assessment task 3 is the hardest of all assessment tasks so far. Why? On this assessment, we are compelled to fulfill (or surpass) the demand of standard academic writing. Therefore, we have to be really meticulous about all requirements of good writings, such as clear and strong thesis, clear topic sentences and many other features of each type of texts. My first impression on this task was a not-really-that-hard task. However, as I was brought deeper by the intense difficulties of writing a good text, I found myself in feeling of consternation and dismay. What used to be not-really-that-hard task has slowly evolved into not-really-that-easy task.

Fortunately, from all those pains, come great gains. These assessment tasks have made me learned a lot regarding academic writing skills. I’ve learn to write compare and contrast, research, persuasive, reaction essays with appropriate styles. I also learned to always carefully cite all the sources that I’ve used to avoid the risk of plagiarism.

About the topic itself, I’ve learned a lot about weapon technology especially nuclear warfare. Since I’ve been discussing nuclear warfare in my compare and contrast, reaction and persuasive essays, I’ve acquired valuable information vis-à-vis effects of nuclear warfare towards global society and how human will never stop to develop more powerful and efficient weapon technology in order to maintain their power on world community.

Excluding academic writing skills and essay’s topic, there’s also one more thing that I’ve learned. Never ever, I repeat, never ever procrastinate any works that are trusted upon you. I’ve been doing that with this assessment and consequently, I almost had insufficient time to finish all the assessment tasks on time. Consider myself lucky to be able to finish this assessment completely on time.

Among all the texts that I’ve wrote, I think I am most proud with my visual text because I think I’ve used a great design on it. Perhaps its content is not really that engaging, however the attractive design should has contribute in attempt to make the whole piece of poster satisfying.

Perhaps in future I could start to learn to concise my essay effectively, and absorb more sophisticated vocabularies in order to impress my audiences. I think I will also need to be able to pour all my thoughts clearly on my words efficiently. Hopefully, I could improve my writing skill significantly and hence I could be a great writer and achieve fascinating grades and responses on every piece of writing that I made.

Reflection blog - A.William/11.3

This 3rd assessment is the most challenging. I was asked to write two partial essays, one complete essay, one visual or multimedia text and one blog entry about a particular topic. Each type of texts have different purposes. I had to match each text with a purpose.

My topic was about iPods. My first partial essay was about the comparison between iPod Classic and iPod touch. First i thought it was easy since both object is totally different. But after i hand in my first draft, there's lots of things that i need to correct. Because there's too many mistakes i decided to write a new one. My second partial essay was about my opinion on iPod touch. i think that part is the easiest one. The hardest one was the research complete essay on iPod. In this essay i need to cite every information that i used in the text. I don't want my work to be considered as a plagiarism, so i check my essay again and again. The fourth text is a persuasive visual text about iPod Touch.

In this assesment i have learned so much in writing different texts with different purpose. i know that it'll be very useful in the future. i also learned to avoid plagiarism by using quotations and citations.

I'm glad that i can finish this assessment on time. i was really worried because i still have so many things to work on but i have a very short time. I hope the result of this assessment will be satisfying.

In these 2 weeks I’ve been doing this extremely hard assessment. I’m doing this assessment at the last moment so it is so hard for me. This assessment task is to create 5 types of text with compare and contrast, research, opinion and reaction, persuasive, and reflection. The form of text that we must create using these characteristics are full essay , 2 partial essays , a visual text and a blog.

The first task for me is to create a research partial essay about ITunes. I did a lot of research for this topic. I search in several resource such as Wikipedia, etc. The second task is to create opinion and reaction partial essay about windows media player. I must admit that I did a lot of thinking in this part. The third part is compare and contrast about the visual text. I had some problem in doing this. The third part is creating a persuasive essay about iTunes. The last task is to create a reflection about what I’ve learn at assessment task 3. This is what I’ve been doing right now.

What I’ve learn at this topic is how to create a different type of text. I also learn that we should not plagiarize someone’s work , because it is the same as we steal things from somebody. Some challenge in this assessment was to pick a word to use. It is very hard to choose the right words for essay. Thank you for giving me this task, so I can learn that plagiarize is not good and doing task at last minute is also not good.

The first time I got the notification for Assessment task 3, I felt really depressed because it required me to make 5 pieces of academic English writing. But eventually when I started to work on it and took it as a challenge, it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. The best piece I am most proud of is my compare and contrast essay, because it took me a lot of hard work and I spent a lot of time making corrections in my grammar and body paragraph, which I had difficulties with.
In this assessment task, which topic is technological issue, I chose Blackberry and iPhone as my topic discussion. From this particular task, I have learned that the presence of advanced in technology causes great impacts and changes to the world of communication. In my conclusion, for business uses, people prefer to choose Blackberry bold, whilst for entertainment and fashion lifestyle, people prefer iPhone as their gadget.
From this class, I have learned many things, including developing my academic English skill and my ability to make different types of writing. Thanks to Miss Laura and Maam Karla for their help to me. Though my grammar skill is still not perfect, but through their guidance, I can learn many new things and knowledge. I have really tried my best to get a better result than my previous assessment. In the future, I hope to be more diligent and be a responsible student in order to improve my skill and knowledge.

My Academic Writing Reflection

Learning academic writing is both a challenging and interesting way of learning. Academic writing is in fact, well, hard (of course!!), confusing, and took a lot of time, energy and not to mention thinking. I also learned so many things during this assessment. The most obvious thing I learned is the difference in text types. Some of the text types are familiar for example persuasive and research while the other two –Reaction/opinion and Compare and contrast –is not very familiar.

I’ve learned the details and elements in each text by putting it directly into writing, which is some kind of practice also. I can also differentiate the type of text that Ms. Laura and Ma’am Karla had taught us. Now, I know the purpose of each kind of text. Moreover, since the topic is technology, I learned more deeply about operating system especially Macintosh. It was also a personal studying so I can maximize my Mac Book’s potential. I like my topic very well because I am a fan of Mac and I wanted to know more about it. From researching I knew the difference between Mac and Windows and what are the specialties of Mac.

The most challenging task in doing this assessment is time management and understanding deeply about the work given. I have to use the time given efficiently or it will make students stressed out. However, I am proud with my work especially my Persuasive full essay. My work is not perfect yet that’s why in the future I had to do more research, improve my grammar and be more organized. Overall, I love this project and I didn’t regret doing this assignment because I think it’s another good way of learning and practicing. But it’s such a relief to submit this assignment. Hehe... =p

From the three assessments that I have gone through in English lesson, I think this third assessment is the hardest one. The reason is because it has lots of works to do compared to the two previous assessments. I have to create a portfolio whose theme is technology that contains four pieces of academic writing, which are one piece of full essay, two pieces of partial essay, and one piece of reaction/ opinion essay, also one piece of visual/ media representation. That is why I think it totally challenged me! However, this third task makes me learn a lot.

The lesson that I learn most is to write in a formal way. Because this is an academic writing, I have to discipline myself to not write in an informal way like using conversational language, inappropriate words, jargon, and slang. I also learn how to write a partial essay as I never write a partial essay before. I think partial essay is really helpful in writing full essay.

My main topic in this assessment is iPhone. I choose iPhone as my topic because iPhone is new and many people are addicted to it. Additionally, I myself also use iPhone so that it makes me easier to work on it. For the full essay, I decided to do a compare and contrast between iPhone and iTouch. In the first partial essay, I specifically discussed about iPhone, which includes its history and its effects to the public society. While in the second partial essay, I reacted to my iPhone as I use it in my daily life. For the media/ visual representation, I preferred to create a poster in a purpose to persuade people to buy iPhone. After finished working on this assessment, I feel I become more knowledgeable about iPhone.

Although there were so many difficulties that I met in the working process of this assessment (especially due to limitation of time), finally I could finished it before the due date. Actually, I have lots of problems in grammar, topic sentences, sentences’ structure, and organization, but thanks to Ms. Laura and Ms. Karla who helped me in editing my drafts so it gets better as I submitted draft more than once.

I am really proud of all the work that I have done because I have tried my best! I hope in the future, I could do better by read more English books and practice more writing.

windy's english reflection

In assessment English task 3, I learn how to write 4 different kind of text, such as visual or multimedia text, blog, complete and partial essays. I choose Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2 as video game consoles technology for my topic of writings.
I find it hard when I should decide the type of academic writings must fits with portfolio piece. I have to considerate it very carefully because every piece had its own difficulty. Different requirements of each text have challenged me to learn how to cite and how to make a strong thesis and topic sentence for each writings. Also, I learn to be a good gamers and buyers where I must be more careful in choosing video game console because every game console had its own characteristics.
Research partial essay is the text that I most proud of because I am quite confident about my organization and my ability to find good resources. My information about Nintendo Wii is wide enough which help me find topics to find in the internet. In contrast, I am not very confident about my complete essay. It is caused by my weakness in spell and grammar checks. I find it hard to connect each sentence with another to make it good and interesting to read.
I am not a good writer. But I want to improve it. I will try to make an outline before I am doing some writings. I’ll promise to be more discipline in arranging my time so I will not starring at my laptop in the middle of the night anymore. I’ll try to read more English books too. Hope, I could improve my writing skills, because I know this skills are important for my future.

Our 3rd assessment is to make a portfolio consisting 5 pieces of writing. I chose comparison/contrast for complete essay, research for first partial essay, persuasive for visual or multimedia text, reaction/opinion for second partial essay, and finally writing my reflection in a blog. My friends and I have to choose 1 topic relating to technology. My topic is Iphone 3G. I chose Iphone 3G because it is one of the most popular cellular phone.
There are many challenges that I faced in order to complete this portfolio. I was needed to practice writing more. There always been grammar or sentences, ideas, thesis, etc that I need to fix. Another problem is the time given for this assessment is only two weeks. I needed more time in order to do well in this assessment due to other pile of home works, tests, quizzes, assessments, and projects. So, when I managed to finished the portfolio in two weeks, it really surprised me. Thank you to Ms. Laura and Mrs. Karla that gave us computer lab time. It was very helpful.
By doing this assessment, I learnt how to write a proper essay. I learnt how I should manage my time even better. I also found out more about Iphone 3G and Ipod touch. I found out more about their history, more about their similarities and found out more about their differences and uses.
What I learnt about academic writing is that I need to write bibliography correctly, write the date I open the web. I also need to cite all informations that did not come from my head or not my idea. But actually it was for my own good. Not citing informations that do not come from our heads is plagiarism. There are consequences for plagiarism at my school, which is getting a zero and I absolutely do not want that. I realized that the academic writing and techniques taught by Ms. Laura and Mrs. Karla will be useful now and in the future.
My favorite piece is my first partial essay, which is researching about Iphone 3G. For me by doing the research for the essay, I got to know more about Iphone 3G. Another reason is because when I submitted the draft, there were fewer mistakes than the other drafts.
I still have some improvements that need to be done in the future. I have to practice more and submit more drafts to my teachers. I should improve my writing skills. Time management is another factor that I definitely need to improve next time. The successes in doing this assessment are finishing the portfolio and submit it to my teachers on time, and contributing a blog entry to year 11 blog.

Evita Santoso 11.3-Reflection

In this English unit, I learned about technological issues and about academic writing. My task is to write 4 pieces of academic writings which are compare and contrast piece, research, persuasive and reaction/opinion piece. I really learned a lot from this unit.
My topic is about iPod Touch. I think iPod Touch is cool. I am falling in love with it and I really want to buy one. I learned that technologies keep growing in this modern time and these technologies are making humans’ life easier and more efficient. However, misuses of technologies might give humans bad impact. For example, people misuse of internet, telephone or text messaging to trick others.
I think this project is hard. It took me a lot of time to think what to write. I have to write and edit my pieces several times. I think I still have difficulties in my grammar, vocabulary and in arranging the ideas that I want to write. However, I learned a lot. I learned that making an outline is important before writing an essay so that the ideas are arranged logically and clearly. Editing is also important to revise the essay and correct mistakes. The piece that I most proud of is the multimedia/visual piece because I have to combine texts and pictures using my creativity to make that pieces.
It is obvious that I am still not perfect in writing essays. However, I want to improve. I think I should write more essays with outlines before making the essay and a lot of editing. I should read English books a lot to expand my vocabulary and grammar. I hope from this time, I can improve my writing skill.

Reflection Blog by Ian

I had almost a month to complete this assessment but I got too relaxed until the last two week when I started to look for a topic. I didn’t go with the general topics you suggested because every other people were doing it and I didn’t want to bore you (Mrs. Karla or Ms. Laura) by giving something you will read over and over.

My initial topic was green technology, but I changed due to green technology’s tedious articles and hard jargons. So, I decided to go with the topic of weapons technology. I did “Research” and “Opinion” in the form of partial essays, “persuasive” in the form of a complete essay, “comparison/contrast” in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, and last but not least is my reflection towards this third English assessment.

I learned a lot from this assessment. First, I need to divide my time better and not do things the last minute because until the last day three of the five pieces were a mess while I didn’t even started on the other two. Secondly, I now know that in order to make a good essay we need to plan. This includes having a thesis and topic sentence, not forgetting that each paragraph should be divided by ideas.

The longer I am in year 11, the more I understand how important it is not to plagiarize. My worst fear is getting a zero due to unintended plagiarism. I promised to both teachers that my work is not plagiarism.

I didn’t have much trouble with this assessment other than the time-frame I’m working in, which is too short. I only handed two drafts to Ms. Laura. If only I had started sooner, I know I could get a much higher score by editing my text over and over till perfection.

Filbert Benedictus - Reflection

Hi, this is Filbert. I am writing this blog to give a reflection on what I have learned during these past few weeks doing assessment task about technological issue. I am specifically doing this portfolio about YouTube which interests me the most among all the other topics written in the last page of the assessment notification.

I have learned many things, either about my topic (YouTube) or my academic writing. First of all, I have learned a lot about YouTube, such as its history, how it could gain so much attention from internet users, how it change a lot of people’s habit, and so on. I think I have also improved my academic writing, such as that I should cite every little information that I get from the internet. Also each time I submit a draft of my piece of writing, my teachers would always give me another hint on what can I do to improve them. I have learned that I should not be repetitive when writing an essay and other useful information.

My assessment task is divided into 5 parts, which are two partial essays, a complete essay, visual or multimedia text and this blog entry. I was very interested in doing the visual text, because I myself like to make posters. For me, this assessment task is somewhat interesting and I enjoy doing it because I think the topic that I chose is exciting.

english assessment task 3

In this assessment task 3, I challenged to make 4 types of academic writing such as comparison/ contrast, research, persuasive, reaction/opinion, and reflection in 5 different ways to represent it like visual/media, complete essay, two partial essay, and blog. The topic of this assessment is about technological issues and I chose Skype. Now, I know more about Skype: features, how it developed, and how it attracts many people to become its users. I also learnt many things especially about how to get reliable websites, not plagiarized, analyze and organize information, structure, and also academic writing can represent in different ways. It makes me realize that study about academic writing and language itself is really important. For me, the most hard is to make research partial essay because I must think about the structure and to find reliable websites which provide good information. I take a long time to accomplish it. I am most proud with my visual/ media because I can put my creativity and imagination into it without thinking about how many words or paragraphs. I feel surprise when I could finish this assessment on time and feel that I’m success through all problems in this assessment. On the other hand, I feel failures because I can’t give many drafts of my academic writing. Next time, I will improve my grammar, vocabulary, time management, and structure of my writing.

Blog Entry

Time passed by so fast, and it is sooner than we expect that the academic writing topic have come to its end. All this time I learned many useful things with my friends. Together with Miss Karla and Miss Laura as our great tutor, we have strived to become a better writer. In the end my dedication, hard-work, and spirit have pays off, as I have managed to learn something important. Not just a better writer I have become, but an intellectual and mature person. In this blog entry, I want to share my story of how I earn the lesson of my life.

Failure and Success those 2 words are a part of a person’s life. It was in the middle of an English class, that an assessment was given to us. “We’re going to learn how to write properly” she said. That is just the beginning. Since then, the world turned upside-down. English class turned into an amazing class which we enjoyed. Utilizing our ideas and submitting it into a solid paragraph had become things which were hard to be done. But with the guidance of my teacher, we managed to grasp the technique wonderfully. That’s just a little part which we learned in that topic. Structures of Essays, its various types, and the agonizing part of plagiarism have all plundered in our brain in those days.

One thing which makes me proud was my persuasive poster. It was taking a lot of time, and I am glad that the time I have spent doesn’t end to be wasted. For me, it was beautifully designed and wonderful. I’ve also managed to learn much from Apple, as it was my chosen topic at that time after all. Though it has come to an end, the most valuable things that I learned from this topic were that practice makes us perfect. By writing a lot, we could become a better writer, and that is what both, Miss Karla and Miss Laura have showed me about. With that I am grateful to both of them and I can’t wait to see what’s waiting me up ahead in English Class.

Stevany Leonard 11.3

In this 3rd English assessment, we were asked to make several academic writing about technological issue and I chose Nintendo Wii. When I got the notification from Miss Laura, man… I was so shock to find out that I need to do FIVE essays and each of them has different requirements. It’s pretty hard, and I felt like I wanted to scream so hard. The assessment that I’m doing right now really challenged me to write a good essay and produce the right topic sentence.

I chose the persuasive type for multimedia. For me it is the most interesting and proud piece due to the fact that I really love Nintendo Wii. It eases me to persuade others to purchase Wii. I also could use my creativity to do this multimedia thing. Well, the part that I hate most, though, is the research essay because it is time consuming and it’s hard to get the right and reliable sources from the internet.

Although there are some difficulties, I learned a whole lot from academic writings. Now I could really understand the differences between research, opinion, persuasive, etc. I also learned how to make a good structure in writing an essay, how to find reliable sources from the internet, and how to stay away from PLAGIARISM (Ooo.. the temptation). I learned mostly about Nintendo Wii on the Research and Comparison/Contrast essay because through those two essays I could understand how and when Wii was created and the impacts which were given to the users.

Overall, I feel that my work is still not well done. I really need to up my writing skill by keep practicing on how to write a proper essay more often and reading more books so that I could organize sentences better. I also need to learn how to schedule my time to do my works long before the due date so that I could get a better score.

Reflection Blog

To be honest, this assessment task 3 is really hard. It took away my leisure time and it's a lot of work. Compare/ Contrast, Research, Reaction/ Opinion, Reflection, and Persuasive are all hard, but I find the visual and persuasive to be the easiest from the five types of writing because , so I begin working on it first. The hardest part for me is the Research, because it was hard to find the source that it took me 4 hours just to find them. I worked from the easiest to the hardest.

In visual and persuasive, I just worked on finding the pictures and using Adobe Photoshop CS3 to work the visual and persuasive. It took me just 1 hour. I learned that persuasive must be attractive. Then, I worked on the Compare/ Contrast and complete essay. For the first time writing on it, I find it hard but then it becomes easier to write. The challenging in this section is finding the websites. I found lots of review but most of them are useless. Also, writing 500-700 is hard. It took me 4 hours to write a good draft. In this section, I learned that writing Compare/Contrast must use " one side vs. other side" structure. And also, it needs citation to make people believe on the Compare/Contrast essay.

For the Reaction/Opinion and partial essay, I find the hardest part is finding source. Same as Compare/Contrast, very few are useful. Also, organizing and thesis is hard because I am not giood at these. That's what I learn from Reaction/Opinion. Same as Research, organizing and thesis are hard, but much easier than Reaction/Opinion.

In conclusion, the assessment task 3 is hard, but I learned lots from it. This is a great benefits for me.

Toni Theodore Blog Entry

Toni Theodore 11.3 Blog Entry

From Two weeks ago until now, I’m stressed because of this 3rd English assessment. This 3rd assessment is driving me crazy with types and forms of text. I must make 5 types of text such as a compare and contrast, a research, a reaction and opinion, a persuasive, and a reflection. These types of text must be put into 5 forms of text such as two partial essays, a complete essay, a visual text, and a blogging. These types and forms of text must have a topic about technology and I chose Google as my topic.

My first partial essay is a compare and contrast of Google maps and Yahoo! maps. Then my visual text is a persuasive poster of Google Earth. I didn’t have many difficulties when doing these two. But for the complete essay and the second partial essay I got a bit confused when doing it. My complete essay is a research about history of Google, growth of Google, and Future of Google. My first draft was collected and when I got it back Miss Laura said it was a plagiarism, I was stressed out and confused. Then Miss Laura told me to make my own sentences and not to plagiarize. After that, I had finished three parts of my assessment. I was happy because I thought there’s only two left and I thought make a visual text was easy. But when I want to do my visual text, I had no idea what I’m going to do. Then I make a persuasive poster about Google with Adobe Photoshop.

As I’m doing this assessment, unconsciously I’ve learned how to make an academic writing and not to plagiarize. This assessment also makes me learn other things such as how to make footnotes. I was surprised that making types and forms of text are very hard.
I am happy that I have finished this hard assessment and I hope I’ll the best score that I can get. In the future, I will try not to do my assessments, projects and homeworks on last minute. So, I can submit more drafts.

Reflection - Blog

In the recent english assessment, the teachers asigned us to write four kinds of academic writing (compare/contrast, research, persuasive, and opinion) about technology. We ought to make them in the form of a complete essay, partial essays, and visual text.

I learnt a lot from this assessment (from both my topic and the academic writinng). From the academic writing, I learnt how to cite, and how to differentiate between reliable cost and unreliable source from the internet. Before, I didn’t know how to format bibilography and footnotes but now, I know that the date is required for citing. From researching the topic I choose (wind energy), I learnt how a turbine works, and how they advantage and disadvantage people and environment and that wind turbines can be placed off shore or in a small scale such as at home.

There are some aspects that surprised and challenged me when I worked on my assessment. The first one was the time. I tought the time was very long, and enough to make the whole texts, but it turned out that the time was not enough, I needed to race with time in doing some essays. This because of other subjects’ tasks that was given between the working period. The second was the topic. I accidentally chose a (quite) hard topic that I don’t expert in. Since I’m not an expert and never had experience with my topic, it is hard to find a good reliable source.

For me this assessment is not very succesful because I haven’t put all of my effort into it since I need to do other subjects’ work. I think this can be overcome by having more flexible time.

David 11.3

My topic for this assessment is about piracy. From my research, it's become clearer to me that people have various views and opinions on piracy issue. It turns out that not all people are against piracy, like the opinion I'm taking for my persuasive partial essay, where the person is convincing people to use pirated Vista rather than the genuine one. However, there is also someone that I found on SingaporeExpats.com that really hates piracy issue and strongly opposes it. But yet, the division of people's opinions has not stopped there. Some people that oppose it treat it as stealing while some others are treating it as a copyright violation, but not stealing.

Another thing that I've learned from this unit is how to write a proper academic writing. I just know how to form and use a thesis statement. I learned how I should form and separate my paragraphs and hoe to use a topic sentence properly. I learned how to compile a good outline and how to cite properly with footnotes. I realized that those are the skills I need to have for my future needs, especially in my study in the future. This unit has helped me to write in a good and acceptable way.

Natanael 11.3 Blog Refelction

Natanael 11.3 Reflection Blog

For the last few weeks, I’ve been given an English assessment about types of text. I have to make a complete essay, two partial essays, a visual text, and a blog reflection. Through out the whole assessment I have to pick a topic and I chose weapons technology as my topic.

My complete essay is a compare and contrast writings comparing the famous M16 with the simple AK47. Then for the first partial essay I wrote about my research on AK47. I didn’t really have much trouble doing both of it. But for the third and fourth part of the assessment I got a bit frustrated. My second partial essay is about my reaction to an article about AK47. My first draft was collected on the last day and when I got it back the teacher (either Ms. Laura or Mc. Karla I don’t know for sure) wrote that my writing was not reacting on the article so that I have to start over. At last I finished the three parts and continue to the last one. I thought that the visual text would be fun and easy to make. But when I sit down in front of my computer, I realized that I have no idea at all. I panicked but at last I made it.

This assessment makes me learn a lot of thing. I learned about putting ideas together and make a good writing. I also learned that pressing ctrl+alt+F is making footnotes. In making this assessment I was surprised that putting ideas together to make a good result was very difficult. I have to sit for hours thinking about what I want to make.

I am relieved that I have finished the assessment. I succeeded to make writings that I think is good (I don’t know whether Ms. Laura and Ms. Karla would think, since they have high standard of marking). I am very proud of my poster because for me the picture is very cool.

In the future I think I have to work harder. I have to submit more drafts like Filbert. I also have to try not to make my projects on the last minute.

Reflection on Blog, by Alvin W. 11.3

Creating an academic writing has been a challenge to me. We were to make several text types in this assessment. Those are research, persuasive, opinion/response, visual/multimedia, and reflection. I have to admit, this assessment surely is tiring. The first time I got the notification, I planned to finish it immediately, but somehow I procrastinated. I haven’t finished my research and opinion piece when I posted this entry. This time I learned about one thing about procrastination; the more you procrastinate, the more difficult the task will be.

My topic, the Conficker worm, was a malware (malicious software) which exploits Microsoft Windows’ bug. At the time Ms. Laura told that students could choose their own topic, I was excited about discussing the malware on my texts. After a week from the due date I realize that this topic has the lack of reliable sources, so I couldn’t tell much about it. “It’s too late to change my topic; there will be not enough time…” I thought. So I continued and created non-maximal result on my writings.

However, I find it easy on the visual piece, because I had a clear picture of it. I just need a suitable picture for my poster and some description of what I discuss… Voilà! It’s done. Even though I’m confident with it, doesn’t mean that it is good enough to meet the standards of a good poster. How will my poster be judged, it’s up to the judges.

My failures on this assessment are: difficult and complicated topic which led to lack of sources, working on the last minute (not my fault though; I was sick yesterday), and encountered too much distraction (friends, they always bug me). I haven’t got much success, but as soon as I finish this assessment that would be my first success.

As I mentioned before, I had troubles with the sources’ reliability, so I will finish the entry here to continue working on the opinion piece.

Reflection Blog

Learning academic writing really challenged me as the topic taught by Ms. Laura and Ma'am Karla is not as simple as what I read at my English textbook before.

For last few weeks, I learnt how to make different types of writing such as persuasive, compare and contrast, reaction and opinion, research and also reflection. Those texts are applied in different appearance of writing like complete essay, partial essay, making video or other type of media and also through internet by posting it on blog.

For my English assessment 3, I was told to put some effort in making five different texts with different forms of writing. I choose to write a complete essay about compare and contrast, a reaction and opinion for my first partial essay, a research for my second partial essay, making video for my media and also a reflection which I need to write on the internet; year 11.3 blog.

I most proud on my media because when making the media, I felt that it was the most enjoyable time compared with other texts. I'm not really confident with it as when I submitted my drafts between last few days and last week, there are still many mistakes remained and it was hard to improve it.

Making partial essays is my failure as sometimes I still confused of how to write it in the perfect structure. Making the media is my successes which I can freely choose how to develop and create my idea as unique as I can.

I hope in my future, I can be more prepared in making some pieces of academic writing as I will need to write some essays in my future. To improve my writing in the future, I need to read my writing as many as I can and loudly so I can find some mistakes I made. Other than that, I can also ask other people to help me in finding my mistakes.

Personally, I think that learning this third unit - academic writing is one of the most important things to learn. Thanks to Ms. Laura and Ma'am Karla.

Reflection on Blog by Kevin Cahya 11.3

Making the academic writing in this unit has been taught by Miss Laura Mail and Karla McGrath. We have been learning the way to write several texts such as Compare and Contrast, Research, Persuasive, Reaction and Reflection. Each of them has their own types of techniques. The language used in every text is also different. This blog will explain more about what we have learned in this unit including the technological issue that I have made in this unit.

More formal language is developed in this unit. Using more formal language helps me a lot in developing a good writing. Writing “compare and contrast” essay is not the hardest part in my tasks. But finding the important thing to be compared was harder for me. Persuasive would be the most fun part to do. In persuasive, I chose to write in the form of Visual. It is fun for me to tell somebody about my topic in the form of multimedia. We can do a lot of thing in multimedia to share our ideas.

My reflection on 3D animation is also represented on this blog. 3D animation has been the most attractive thing to me. Many people consider 3D animation to be real movie rather than saying it as an animation. Almost no unreal things can be seen directly using naked eyes. 3D animation appears to have some differences and similarities with the 2D animation. But 3D animation have better quality and more attractive to most people. For example, Final Fantasy movies have been the most popular 3D animation through the world wide. The technologies keep improving. As a result Final Fantasy’s most recent movie attracts more people to watch it.

Animation is very popular in America and Japan. The biggest production of 3D animation is in America. Disney and Pixar have shown many 3D animations produced until now. In Japan, Square Enix has produced many 3D games and movies such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Even though Japan has less production, they have a very modern animation. Not like Disney that show fairy tales and adventurous story, Japan shows more humanistic story to the world.

Many other things can be found through my research. But I think those are all the things important to be known by other people. I hope other people who read my post would have some interests on my topic.
